Overview The International Conference on Materials Research and Education: Future Trends and Opportunities was held in Doha, Qatar in April 2005. Its three-part mission was to develop strategies for building regional capacity in Materials Research and Education, stimulate regional collaborations, and foster international cooperation. The conference was attended by more than 80 researchers, educators and administrators from 11 countries: Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and the United States. Plenary Sessions focused on four cross-cutting research themes: Energy Materials, Infrastructure Materials, Advanced Materials, and Materials for Preservation of Cultural Heritage. A special forum was held on Materials Education. Participants also took part in international working group sessions to identify common ground and formulate strategies to build capacity and expand international cooperation.
