The US-China Workshop on Nanostructured Materials for Global Energy and Environmental Challenges was held September 22-24, 2008 in Evanston, Illinois. This was first in a series of bilateral US-China workshops co-sponsored by the NSF and the Natural National Science Foundation of China to address two major themes: (1) Advanced Solar Cells and (2) Nanomaterials and the Environment. More than 60 invited researchers, students, and government observers from the US and China participated. A series of lectures gave an overview of key activities, research infrastructures, and funding programs in both countries and a poster session showcased student research. Most of the program was dedicated to US-China working group sessions, which identified areas of complementary expertise, generated ideas and project outlines for potential collaborative research, and produced specific recommendations for improving US-China cooperation in the near and long term. The primary finding of the Workshop was that solving global energy and environmental challenges will require transformative approaches and new levels of cooperation. Among the key recommendations to emerge was the establishment of a jointly funded and operated US-China global institute that would provide a seamless, sustainable environment for long-term collaborative research, education and networking. ![]() A workshop report is available on the Event Summary page . The second workshop in this series will be held in China in 2009. Read More..... |
