Global School Goes to Sydney PDF Print E-mail

The Global School for Advanced Studies (GSAS) fosters innovative solutions to global challenges and prepares young researchers to collaborate effectively with global partners.

The School recruits talented advanced graduate students and postdocs from around the world, assigns them to Global Research Teams, offers them mentoring from world-class experts, and challenges them to plan collaborative research projects that leverage their complementary capabilities. The most promising projects are implemented via team-based research fellowships at host institutions.

GSAS Sessions focus on global challenge topics in Energy, Environment, Health, and Security. "Systems-oriented" lectures cover basic research, policy, manufacturing, and technology transfer.

The Second GSAS Session on Advanced Solar Cell Research was held July 2008 in parallel with a Symposium on Photovoltaics and Thin Film Solar Materials at the IUMRS International Conference on Electronic Materials (IUMRS-ICEM).

Participating Institutions included the Centre for Organic Electronics at the University of Newcastle, Australia, the ARC Centre of Excellence for Electromaterials Science at the University of Wollongong, Australia, the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems in Germany, the National Taiwan University and National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan, and Northwestern University in the US.

The Session program was designed to spark innovation in the promising area of organic solar cell development and prepare young researchers from diverse cultures and disciplines to lead future global initiatives. Participants attend a series of lectures, engaged in collaborative research planning, received mentoring from senior experts, and visit local research facilities near Sydney.
