Participants included researchers, educators, and government agency officials from Australia, China, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and the United States. Participants presented national and regional activities, discussed collaborative research needs, identified areas of common interest, and explored joint funding opportunities, including the "Materials World Network" joint funding program established by the US National Science Foundation and its counterpart agencies worldwide.

A special symposium was held in Sydney, Australia to highlight the structure and activities of the Materials World Network and expand cooperation with Asian-Pacific partners.
The symposium was hosted by the International Conference on Electronic Materials (IUMRS-ICEM 2008) in Sydney, Australia and jointly organized by US and Australian partners: the Australian Research Network for Advanced Material (ARNAM) and the Materials Research Institute at Northwestern University.
